Introduction
Target Value Design (TVD), the process of designing towards a budget without sacrificing quality or extending schedules, is increasingly popular with owners. TVD works when everyone involved in a project is part of the process. It requires true collaboration, transparency, rapid estimating, and rapid decision-making.

Atrium Health, a non-profit health organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina, employed TVD to build a new rehabilitation hospital and acute care bed tower at the Atrium Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) campus. Atrium awarded the $650M project to DPR Rodgers (a joint venture between DPR Construction and Rodgers Builders), NBBJ, and WSP. To manage the projects, Stantec was selected to augment Atrium’s in-house staff.

Preconstruction planning for the two projects was handled separately. The team tackled the $100M rehab hospital first. From March to December 2020, approximately 30 people from multiple cluster groups collaborated towards the goal. They used their existing tools to track their project costs, budget, and timelines as they had done with other projects in the past.

“Tracking decisions for the rehabilitation hospital quickly became chaotic,” said Melanie Moreschi, Preconstruction Manager for DPR Rodgers. “Due to having so many users in the same tracking log, it was too easy for files to be overwritten, causing new items to be lost or even to have two copies of the same file running simultaneously. Furthermore, it was challenging to track items affecting multiple building systems such as structure, skin, mechanical and electrical into separate project clusters.”

DPR Rodgers had to ensure that the TVD process was smoother for the CMC bed tower project. They had to find an alternative — and fast.

Franz Nüsing GmbH & Co KG, founded in 1878, is a world leader in movable wall technology, including mobile partitions, glass walls, and folding walls. These products are frequently customized to meet specific technical requirements. Nüsing uses ARES CAD software to produce the technical drawings that document its projects. The design is facilitated by an application developed by Nüsing and running on top of ARES Commander, named Nüsing CAD, which assists technicians with parametric components that can be inserted in the drawings. The Nüsing team can also use ARES Kudo to access drawings online, and easily share them with customers and other external users.

This project was presented to Ardaena in 2018 by Vikonen Company from Turkey to create an alternative to the process of designing, optimizing and producing manufacturing parts for this project.

The main idea has been based upon having the process from Conceptual Design, Analyze to Construction on Free Form Structures Automatically by less than 7 clicks. It is being developed by Python and C# both for a better flexibility up and running for different components.

Kangaroo can generate structures in static equilibrium in a simple and intuitive way using dynamic relaxation. Once we have this equilibrium structure we can rearrange the force vectors to form such a reciprocal diagram.

Grasshopper is a visual programming language and environment that pairs with Rhino 3D, a software program also developed by Robert McNeel & Associates. Grasshopper allows users to build algorithms by dragging and connecting components on a digital canvas. From parametric modeling and fabrication, lighting performance analysis, to building energy consumption, Grasshopper provides an intuitive way to explore design without requiring programming experience.

Single layer space frame structures are a bit off chart of challenging projects yet are so amusing to handle via novel computational tools. Ava-Center has been designed by Floyd Motion Architects leading by Reza Daneshmir in Iran. The related structure has been built upon a sub-contractor known as Alusys.ir and Ardaena took part in Form-Finding and Tessellation Optimization processes. No matter how a free-form footprint based structure could be tough to manage for optimized design, in this project we tried to have everything modeled parametric, hence we could control the design alternatives. We did not use caddisfly here but based on the experience we got, Ardaena developed Caddisfly 01.01 afterwards for its own use, however, in compare to the time Ava-Center was designed by, if we had developed it before, we could save almost 4 months ahead to have everything modeled.

Weaverbird is a topological modeler that contains many of the known subdivision and transformation operators, readily usable by designers. Instead of doing the work repeatedly, or sometimes using complicated scripts, this plug-in reconstructs the shape, subdivides any mesh, even made by polylines, and helps preparing for fabrication.

Tennis Court is displaced on the roof of Iran-mall project located in Tehran, Iran. The project was under progression when we got invited to work on. Ali Karimbeigi Darian was the main façade consultant and Pars-Goofca had taken on the contractor responsibility. Ardaena team was asked to manage the algorithmic shop drawing of the façade structure double curved belts. The images below show the sine based curves of the façade. We were in charge of using Grasshopper3D to produce prefabrication documents in correspondence to tiny changes but automatically matched.
