Project Overview
Aedifice, a leading property development firm, sought to develop the Selo project, a 11-acre residential community in Eden Terrace, Auckland, New Zealand. The project encompassed 243 buildings across 210 lots, with an extensive utility infrastructure involving over 5 miles of sanitary sewer, wastewater, and water supply pipes. To address the complexity of this large-scale development, Aedifice partnered with local engineers Civix who leveraged the innovative Allsite.ai platform, specifically Service AI 1.0, to optimize the design and construction process.


The Challenge
The Selo project faced several challenges due to its size and scope, including the need to design a highly efficient underground pipe network. The requirements were substantial:

555 (2.7 miles) storm drain pipes

385 (1.7 miles) sanitary sewer pipes

536 (2.6 miles) water supply pipes

The intricate design had to meet stringent engineering rules, including proper pipe cover, minimum clearance between pipes, and minimum grades. Additionally, the design needed to be cost-effective, balancing both capital (CAPEX) and operational (OPEX) expenses while minimizing risks of structural conflicts like pipes too close to retaining walls. Flood resilience was also a critical concern, as the area was prone to flooding.


Technology in Action: Allsite.ai's Service AI 1.0
To overcome these challenges, Civix utilized Allsite.ai's Service AI 1.0, an intelligent tool designed to automate and optimize engineering designs. Service AI 1.0 provided a comprehensive solution for the pipe network by:

Setting all pipe invert levels to ensure compliance with engineering rules.
Automatically designing the pipe network to minimize CAPEX and OPEX costs.
Implementing built-in QA checking to detect potential design conflicts, such as pipes near retaining walls.
Automatically sizing pipes based on specified catchments and performing a full flow analysis to ensure optimal performance.
Generating detailed pipe long sections, capacity tables, and plan views that adhered to Auckland City Council standards, eliminating the need for manual drafting.
Calculating trench volumes and setting excavation methods (shoring or benching), improving communication between developers and construction teams.

In addition, semi-automated flood modelling was conducted using the Tuflow flood engine, ensuring the design was resilient against future flood events.

Changes to the design are easy, even after construction has started as the site can be rebalanced within hours and a new servicing network designed.

As a performance-driven general contractor, StructSure Projects has experienced project managers and engineers, superintendents, safety officers, quality control managers and estimators dedicated to delivering successful projects on time, within budget and with complete customer satisfaction.

Located in rural North Yorkshire in England, the project was considered a large residential luxury development. It started with the demolition of a traditional 1970's home, followed by a custom design of new, energy efficient, contemporary home equipped with multiple garages, workshops and stables. All of these elements were designed to have the same consistent aesthetic. Its budget sat around £2 million, including land costs. The design and construction team consisted of five separate parties, including Struct-sure, so there many voices needed to heard during the design and construction process. Inside the main building there is a suspended mezzanine floor as well as a steel spiral staircase with glass balustrades.

What makes this project especially unique is the "three-sided glazing". The glass panels shown in the project photos are the largest available glazing panels for fabrication in Europe, and stand at 5.5 meters (18 feet) tall! These panels were the centerpiece of the design, but also caused some interesting design challenges.

House 00 is a retreat, a sanctuary of the self, and an architectural response to shifting sociality in a post-Covid-19 world. Envisioned as a prototype for living in isolation away from urban density, House 00 is an attempt at rebooting the basic conditions of domesticity, serenity, and intimacy.

Sitting at the highest point in the United Arab Emirates, on the soaring peaks of Jebel Jais northeast of Ras-Al Khaimah, House 00 boasts the critical balance of being simultaneously in nature yet out of reach. Quality of air, breath-taking views and exceptional Dunite rock landscapes make for a perfect location for a unique house.

On the inside, the 2000 SQM contemporary design borrows from traditional elements of local residential architecture, featuring all the amenities for a comfortable and healthy life, as well as the social and cultural necessities of the Emirati family. On the outside, the sculptural limestone and glass façade blends seamlessly into the surroundings, looking pristine yet man-made; monolithic yet architectonic at the same time.

The house is organized into two parts embracing an inner courtyard. Spaces are split between east and west wings based on their respective uses and expected visitors.

Deciduous is a 3D printed pavilion that invites us to revisit our relationship with nature, through an experience reminiscent of walking through an abstracted botanical form.
Building on MEAN’s experiments with 3D printing in design, the pavilion is an exploration in scaling processes to the architectural realm.

Deciduous is composed of a hybrid of 3 different sustainable materials: CNC-milled Birch plywood flooring, Robotically 3D-Printed Concrete Base, and a series of branching 3D-Printed PETG stems, a plastic polymer up-cycled from 30,000 discarded water bottles.

In light of Dubai’s focus on 3D printing as a sustainable technology, the hybridization of state-of-the-art Robotic 3D printing in Plastic and Concrete is a first attempt to explore the possibilities that the two technologies can offer, contributing to the emirate’s vision of ecological construction growth towards 2025.

Deciduous is designed to come together in interconnected parts, and is completely prefabricated off-site. The parts can be mechanically joined on a clean site with no need for heavy machinery. Computational modeling was used to conceive and quantify the design to a level of detailing optimal within the parameters and constraints of Large Format Robotic 3D Printing.

MEAN Designed a 3D printed pavilion for welcoming visitors into the desert of Wadi Rum, south of Jordan. The space serves as an oasis of rest and communal gathering. Drawn to its otherworldly beauty, The desert of Wadi Rum in the south of Jordan attracts visitors from all over the globe.

The topography of Wadi Rum closely resembles that of Mars. This serene desert landscape had been a stage for many space-age movies such as ‘The Martian (2015)’, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)’ and ‘The Last Days on Mars.’

Considering the lightweight geodesic dome system of ‘Mars Camp’ located on a plot near the site, the design team envisioned a novel system of 3D printed panels deployed onto a CNC bent steel pipe system.

By grounding the tent form as a ‘diagram of forces’ emitting various ‘charges’ that correspond to seating areas, we looked at the phenomena of magnetic fields to unify those charges.

We used the patterns emerging from the interaction of one space to another to develop the floor plan of the pavilion. The physical phenomena of the magnetic force patterns between several nodes represent an opportunity for an exciting planning strategy.

To quantify this phenomenon into a digital algorithm simulating those patterns, the team wrote a script that adopts the ‘RK4 Method’, developed by the German mathematicians C. Runge and M.W. Kutta around 1900. The ‘flowlines’ from the magnetic field simulation projecting onto a digitally simulated optimized mesh generated via a script approximating catenary curves.

The script generates vector fields resembling magnetic forces manipulated to subdivide the structure's outer shell into panels within the printing range of a 6-axis industrial robot.

A stepping topography of a 3D printed concrete platform creates a transition from the sandy site to the interior. The mesh is anchored towards the periphery of the stepped platform, creating welcoming archways for entries.

The Desert Pavilion is the outcome of combining ideas from the site with current building technologies.

The structure's design forms a space of shade from the heat of the desert during the day, and a place of celebration, storytelling and rest, at night. It serves as a welcoming, hospitable shelter for today and a case study for inhabiting the arid landscapes of Mars in the future.

The Palari Group has designs to build 15 eco-friendly 3D printed homes on a five-acre parcel of land in Rancho Mirage, an upscale community in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs, California.

These homes will each feature mid-century modern architecture and will consist of:

- a three-bed, two-bath primary residence of 1,450 sq.ft.
- a secondary two-bed, one-bath property on the residence

Each home's 10,000-sq-ft lot will have a swimming pool in the backyard, with the option to pay extra for amenities such as cabanas, hot tubs, fire pits and outdoor showers.
