About Studio Rick Joy

Studio Rick Joy is an architecture, interior design and planning practice based in Tucson, Arizona. Rick Joy has led the studio since 1993 as a cooperative practice, working on projects around the globe from a base at 400 South Rubio Avenue in Tucson's historic centre. The team is deliberately small - around fifteen designers, architects, project managers and specialists - which allows principals to remain directly involved in every commission.

Design Philosophy

The studio's values come from an environment where creativity and discovery sit alongside expertise and experience. Its work is described as the result of comprehensive observation and a generosity of approach - a way of saying that design begins with looking hard at a place before proposing anything for it.

Three ideas recur throughout the work: exactitude, details that support ideas rather than decorate them, and a respect for the origins of craft. The aim is architecture that lives well in its surroundings and becomes a stage for daily life, rather than an object competing with its setting.

Material and Regional Expertise

The studio's early work made rammed earth, weathering steel and board-formed concrete part of the contemporary desert vocabulary. Those materials were chosen for performance as much as appearance: high thermal mass, resistance to intense sun and minimal maintenance in an arid climate. The same reasoning is now applied in Mexico, Vermont, Idaho and elsewhere, with the palette changing while the method remains constant.

Hospitality and Resort Design

Resort work has become a significant part of the practice. Projects such as Amangiri and One&Only Mandarina demonstrate how a landscape-first approach - burying, screening and fragmenting built volume - can deliver luxury accommodation without dominating an extraordinary site.
