David Charlie Brandon designs luxury homes through DCB Interiors, and he also owns the cabinet shop that builds them, East West Cabinet Co. We have been his drafting team since 2022. That adds up to 125 projects so far.

Most jobs are drawings only. Kitchens, butler's pantries, islands, vanities, closets, mudrooms, home offices, bars, wall paneling: almost anything built in. Sets are drawn in AutoCAD to rules his shop wrote down at the start, then go back and forth against his redlines until approved. He gets a DWG the shop can open and a PDF to review.

Sometimes a homeowner needs to see the room first. Then we render it, but only after the drawings are signed off, and from that same geometry.

Why this tool/tech was selected

Brandon runs a design firm and a cabinet shop at the same time, and that shaped what he needed from a drafting partner. The drawings had to come out in a form his shop could cut from without redrawing: frameless boxes, 3/4" solid wood edges on plywood, 1/2" backers, drawer boxes in 3" steps, soft-close hardware only. He wrote those rules down once, early on, and every set since has followed them.

The second reason was having one team for both outputs. Renderings for his clients are built from the approved shop drawings, so a render can't show a detail the shop never received. One contact, one revision cycle, and deliverables in the same format every time.

Challenges the Client Faced before

Every cabinet in these projects has two readers. The homeowner looks at a rendering and sees oak doors and a stone top. The shop reads a drawing and needs box depths, edge profiles and filler dimensions down to a sixteenth of an inch. When the drawing and the picture come from different teams, the geometry drifts and a revision lands in one document but not the other.

On top of that, site measurements often arrive after drafting has started, and a single home can include a kitchen, vanities, a mudroom and a closet system, each with its own revision cycle.

The previous method used

Projects come to us in whatever form the designer already has: dimensioned sketches from the project architect, floor plans with site measurements, a SketchUp model, or a hand-drawn elevation with finish callouts such as paint grade and wood species. The drafting team reads these side by side, checks the dimensions against each other and marks anything still waiting on a site measurement as TBD.

Time / Money saved & the Business Impact.

After 125 projects the process needs almost no explanation. Some briefs now arrive as a short note asking for "the usual", because the shop standards, file formats and review steps were agreed long ago.

Larger homes are split into parallel tasks, one per zone, so drafting capacity grows with the workload instead of waiting on in-house headcount. The largest set so far ran to 29 numbered sheets for a single residence.

The shop opens the DWG files directly, with no translation step. Renderings are made only after the drawings are approved and from the same geometry, so what the homeowner signs off on is what gets built. There is one point of contact and one revision cycle for both.
