The Timber House is a six-storey car park at Orientkaj 2A in Nordhavn, Copenhagen, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects for the development company By and Havn and completed in 2022. Despite the name, this is not a timber-framed building: the name refers to the facade, which is a pixelated relief that recalls the stacks of sawn timber once handled on this quay when Nordhavn was Copenhagen's nineteenth-century industrial Freeport.
The Facade
The elevations are built from a grid of pixels made up of recycled aluminium frames with perforated plates, set against a raw concrete structure. Each pixel sits either flush with the facade plane or 300 millimetres behind it, and that single move produces a three-dimensional relief that changes with the angle of view and the movement of the sun. At street level the language shifts to expanded wood panels mounted on hardwood slats, so the material the building is named after appears where people actually touch it. Sensor-controlled LED lighting is integrated into the facade, animating the building after dark while keeping the surrounding streets safe.
More Than Parking
The brief was never only about storing cars. The building sits directly beside the Orientkaj metro station, and the plan deliberately hands drivers over to public transport: a Kiss-and-Ride zone, direct metro access, ground-floor space for shops and meeting rooms, and green edges that make the perimeter usable rather than dead. In a district being built from scratch, the car park absorbs parking demand for surrounding blocks so those buildings do not have to provide it themselves.
Recognition
The project came out of an open design competition and was later voted Archello Parking Garage of the Year, Public Vote Winner, in 2024. Landscape design was carried out with STED, By og Landskab.

A facade that only exists in three dimensions
The entire architectural idea here is depth. Pixels sit either on the face or 300 millimetres back, and the building reads completely differently depending on where you stand and where the sun is.
