SAP2000 is CSI's general-purpose structural analysis and design software for modeling buildings, bridges, industrial facilities, towers, and other structural systems. Engineers can combine frame, shell, solid, cable, and link elements with linear, dynamic, and nonlinear analysis, then review forces, deformations, stresses, and code-based design results in one Windows application. Choosing it well means checking the required analysis methods, design codes, license level, interoperability, hardware, and review process—not simply whether a model will run.
SAP2000 Overview
SAP2000 is a flexible structural-analysis environment
CSI positions SAP2000 as an integrated application for structural modeling, analysis, design, and reporting. Its object-based 3D environment can represent buildings, bridges, industrial frames, towers, tanks, dams, and unusual systems that do not fit a story-based template. That flexibility puts responsibility on the engineer: connectivity, releases, restraints, mass, load paths, mesh density, nonlinear behavior, and combinations must reflect the intended structure. A stable run is not proof that the assumptions or results are sound.
Its element library supports simple frames and complex finite-element models
Models can combine joints with frame, shell, solid, cable, tendon, and link objects. The official feature documentation covers three-dimensional beam-column behavior, section libraries, Section Designer, object intersections, and several meshing approaches. Model detail should follow the decision being made: a global frame may not need every plate, while local stress or soil-structure questions may require shells, solids, links, or refined meshes. Test units, self-weight, mass, boundary conditions, local axes, convergence, and mesh sensitivity before scaling up.
The analysis menu spans routine and advanced behavior
Depending on license level, SAP2000 can address linear static, modal, response-spectrum, time-history, buckling, P-Delta, staged-construction, pushover, and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Tables, reports, and the API support repeatable engineering workflows
The interface keeps model definition, analysis, design, graphical review, database tables, and reports together. SDB is the native binary model format; S2K supports text-based exchange. The API can create or modify models, run analyses, and extract results through external tools, including .NET- and COM-based workflows. Automation helps with parameter studies, batch checks, and reporting, but scripts need version control, input validation, expected-result tests, and a named engineer. Before upgrading, confirm model compatibility, API and plugin support, CSiXRevit pairing, code changes, licensing, and office validation cases. Archive the original model and read the release notes rather than silently changing a solver or design implementation mid-project.
Pricing depends on level, term, maintenance, and region
CSI's US pricing table, checked July 29, 2026, lists perpetual licenses at $2,977 Basic, $7,439 Plus, $11,903 Advanced, and $17,855 Ultimate. Annual maintenance is $521, $1,301, $2,081, and $3,128 respectively; a three-month Ultimate lease is listed at $2,289 with maintenance and upgrades during the term. These are USD list figures, not universal quotations. Region, tax, reseller terms, academic eligibility, concurrent use, and required features can change the decision.
Trial, education, login, and installation are separate decisions
CSI provides an official trial route; older documentation describes a one-time, noncommercial evaluation, but current duration and eligibility require confirmation. Educational documentation records limits of 30 joints for nonlinear problems and 100 for other analyses, without proving universal free access. SAP2000 installs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. CSI publishes a 16 GB RAM minimum and recommends 64 GB for demanding work. Cloud Sign-in and Customer Center access do not turn the desktop application into “SAP2000 online.”
