Scaling Revit Automation Across 500 Users

Scaling Revit Automation Across 500 Users
Case Study Description:

MOREgroup, a national architecture and engineering organization with 720 employees across 19 offices, adopted Maestro to give its digital practice team a faster, more scalable way to build, manage, and deploy Revit automation. Before Maestro, tool delivery depended on IT packaging cycles, Dynamo package management, and internally developed add-ins that could be difficult to maintain across a distributed organization. With Maestro, MOREgroup moved Revit automation into a digital-practice-owned workflow where tools can be created or adapted, tested, targeted to specific users, and deployed directly inside Revit. At the time of the case study, Maestro had been rolled out to more than 500 Revit users, approximately 40 tools had been deployed, and about a dozen workflows had been recreated from traditional add-ins or other automation sources. The result was a reported 90-95% reduction in idea-to-delivery time.

Why this tool/tech was selected

MOREgroup already had valuable Revit automation in place. The challenge was getting those tools to the right people quickly, reliably, and without creating unnecessary deployment or maintenance overhead. Dynamo workflows helped project teams solve real problems, but managing packages across a multi-data-center environment became increasingly difficult at scale. The firm also maintained an internally developed C# Revit tab, but updates still depended on IT packaging and deployment cycles. Maestro gave MOREgroup a way to shift more ownership of the automation lifecycle directly to its digital practice team. The team can now create or adapt tools, test them, control who receives them, deploy updates, respond to user feedback, and retire workflows from one platform. This allows process improvements to move at the pace of project delivery while IT continues to manage program updates, identity, security, and enterprise controls.

Challenges the Client Faced before

  • Tool updates depended on IT packaging and deployment cycles.

  • Dynamo workflows required local package management and maintenance.

  • Dynamo Player load times could reach up to 30 minutes when scripts and packages were hosted in another data center.

  • Broad Revit add-ins exposed users to commands they did not necessarily need.

  • Tool adoption depended on installation timing, package access, and users being able to find the correct command.

  • User feedback and workflow improvements often had to wait for a future packaged release.

  • Internally developed automation required ongoing deployment and maintenance coordination between digital practice and IT.

The previous method used

Before Maestro, MOREgroup delivered Revit automation through a combination of Dynamo workflows and an internally developed C# Revit add-in. Dynamo scripts could be stored centrally, but required packages still had to be copied and maintained locally. The internal C# Revit tab was managed by digital practice, but new tools and updates still required IT to package and deploy releases before users could access them.

Time / Money saved & the Business Impact.

Maestro gave MOREgroup’s digital practice team direct ownership over a much larger portion of the Revit automation lifecycle. At the time of the case study, the platform had been rolled out to more than 500 Revit users, with approximately 40 tools deployed and roughly 12 workflows recreated from existing add-ins or automation sources. MOREgroup estimated that the time required to move an idea from request to production had been reduced by approximately 90-95%. Individual workflows also produced measurable project-level savings. One revision-cloud reporting tool replaced approximately eight hours of manual data entry by automatically collecting revision information from Revit views and sheets. Maestro also reduced IT involvement in individual process updates, allowing IT to remain focused on program updates, identity, security, and enterprise controls. Digital practice can now respond to feedback, update tools, and deploy improvements directly to the specific users, teams, offices, or projects that need them.

Customer Quote

The biggest operational change has been that we now can operate almost entirely independently in delivering automation and tools to teams. - Josh Harris, Associate Director, Digital Technology, MOREgroup

Additional Information

MOREgroup is a national architecture and engineering organization with 720 employees across 19 offices. Maestro has been deployed to more than 500 Revit users across the organization. The firm is also beginning to sunset its internally developed C# Revit add-in as useful workflows are recreated and managed through Maestro. MOREgroup plans to further evaluate automation value by combining Maestro usage data with operational data, including adoption, command usage, click reduction, estimated labor time avoided, support activity, and time from request to production availability.
