About COBOD
COBOD International is a Danish construction technology company and the world leader in 3D construction printing systems. The name stands for Construction Of Buildings On Demand, and the stated mission is to build smarter through multifunctional construction robots based on 3D printing technology.
The company's framing of the problem is direct: construction is the world's largest industry and one of the least automated. COBOD builds the software-enabled printers intended to change that. Importantly, COBOD is a technology company rather than a builder. It sells and supports the machines; its customers do the building.
History
COBOD was founded in 2015 by Henrik Lund-Nielsen, who remains chief executive. Between 2015 and 2017 the company's engineering research produced Europe's first 3D-printed building, demonstrating the technology worked on a real site rather than in a laboratory.
Commercialisation followed, with the first printer sold in 2019 and demand accelerating from there. PERI, the world's largest formwork manufacturer, joined as a strategic investor, and COBOD opened offices in the United States and Malaysia. Between 2022 and 2025 GE, CEMEX and Holcim came on board as both investors and customers, the BOD3 and BOD XL launched, and operations expanded past 35 countries.
Technology
Printers
COBOD offers three systems: the BOD2, BOD3 and BOD XL, sized for different project types from single custom builds through to high-volume serial housing and industrial-scale structures. Every printer is designed, engineered and assembled at COBOD's own facility with no outsourcing, drawing on more than a decade of construction 3D printing experience.
Materials
A defining commercial decision is the material strategy. COBOD printers run on standard concrete sourced locally, with no proprietary mixes and no supply chain lock-in. Customers use what is already available in their market, which removes a significant barrier that has slowed adoption of competing systems.
Software
Three tools take a building from CAD file to printed structure: COBOD Slice, Configurator and Nozzle Builder, with artificial intelligence built into the workflow. The software layer is what turns the hardware into a usable production system rather than an experimental machine.
Service and Support
COBOD provides installation, training, remote diagnostics and COBOD Care support packages, with local teams across its 35 markets handling deployment and ongoing support.
Scale and Results
More than 90 COBOD systems are operating on active construction sites across six continents, working on everything from single-family homes to multi-storey and industrial-scale projects. The company reports that customers build up to 50 per cent faster at 30 per cent lower cost, and cites a customer project backlog exceeding 300 million US dollars.

COBOD's shareholder base is unusual for a construction technology start-up because its investors are also its customers and route to market:
- General Electric (USA) – a 79 billion dollar industrial and energy technology group investing in construction automation for scalable infrastructure delivery.
- CEMEX (Mexico) – a 15 billion dollar building materials group operating in more than 50 countries, advancing faster and lower-cost concrete construction.
- Holcim (Switzerland) – the world's largest building solutions company, with revenue above 16 billion dollars, integrating COBOD technology into industrialised construction.
- PERI (Germany) – a formwork and scaffolding specialist with revenue above 2 billion dollars active in more than 65 countries, providing deployment infrastructure for large printed projects.
Team and Locations
COBOD employs a team of more than 50 engineers, technicians and specialists across Copenhagen, Miami and Kuala Lumpur. The executive team includes founder and chief executive Henrik Lund-Nielsen, previously group chief executive at Faber within the VELUX Group; co-founder and chief technology officer Simon Klint Bergh, a DTU-trained engineer with over fifteen years in additive manufacturing; co-founder and chief commercial officer Philip Lund-Nielsen, formerly of McKinsey; chief financial officer Jens Berthol Hansen, who spent 27 years at Maersk; and chief information officer Michael Holm, responsible for the hardware and software stack.
Why COBOD Matters to the AEC Industry
COBOD is the clearest test case for whether 3D printing becomes a mainstream construction method rather than a demonstration technology. Three things make it worth watching: the machines run on ordinary local concrete, which removes the materials constraint; the world's largest cement, concrete and formwork companies have put capital behind it, which signals the incumbents expect it to matter; and with 90-plus systems on live sites there is now enough real production data to judge the productivity claims. For contractors and developers assessing automation, COBOD is the reference point.
