 There is no shortage of new ideas in AECO or FS right now. But the real challenge is not coming up with ideas it is actually using them. How do you take an idea and turn it into something that people actually use on real projects?
That is exactly the gap the Trimble 0&ndash;60 Challenge is trying to close. This program is not a competition for startups. It is designed to help new companies connect their solutions to workflows, real platforms and real users across the built environment.
At its core the program helps startups build and integrate their solutions directly into Trimbles ecosystem. This includes software like SketchUp, Tekla and Trimble Connect well as field technologies such as GNSS and laser scanning. The goal is simple: make new solutions usable within existing industry workflows.
We sat down with German Aparicio, who leads the program at Trimble to better understand how it came to life what makes it different and what founders should know if they are thinking about applying.

<h3 style="line-height: 1.5;">Q: What is the Trimble 0&ndash;60 Challenge really trying to tackle?</h3>
According to German Aparicio the industry has reached a turning point.
"We do not have a shortage of solutions anymore " he says. "What we are missing is people actually using them."
He explains that this shift is happening across the industry. Companies are actively looking for solutions they can use today.. Ai and automation are quickly moving from experimentation into practice. The biggest challenge is no longer coming up with ideas it is getting those solutions used in real workflows.
The Trimble 0&ndash;60 Challenge is trying to solve this problem. Startups often struggle not because their solutions are not valuable. Because they lack access to real platforms real users and real integration opportunities.
For Aparicio success is not just about launching a product. It is about whether that product can be used in workflows and deliver value in practice.

<h2 style="line-height: 1.5;">From Idea to Platform: How 0&ndash;60 Came to Life</h2>
<h3 style="line-height: 1.5;">Q: How did the Trimble 0&ndash;60 Challenge come to life, and how has your role shaped it?</h3>
German Aparicio explains that the idea behind the Trimble 0&ndash;60 Challenge was simple but powerful.
"There are a lot of startups in AEC " he says, "but very few have access to the right ecosystem to actually grow."
"The goal was not to create another startup competition " he adds. "It was to build a bridge connecting early-stage companies into real workflows, real products and real users."
The program has evolved into an initiative supporting startups building solutions across Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Owner-Operator workflows. It also includes Field Systems, such as civil, earthworks and geospatial technologies.
At its core the focus comes down to three areas: Connected Data, Connected Design and Connected Field and Jobsite. In words solutions that bridge the gap between digital and physical workflows.

Startups are not building in isolation. They are building on top of tools that teams already use every day. This includes Trimble Connect, SketchUp, Tekla and ProjectSight well as hardware like GNSS receivers, total stations and laser scanners.

Most managed service providers treat AEC firms like any other client: set up the email, monitor the firewall, renew the licenses.&nbsp;
The problem is that an architecture practice is not a law firm or a retail chain. Its people work differently, its software stack is large and demanding, and its culture runs on consensus rather than mandate. Multi-gigabyte Revit models moving across offices and continents are a routine operational challenge, not an edge case. A generic MSP is rarely equipped to meet those realities.
Flying Buttress was built specifically for this gap. Founded in 2010 by Michael Donahue, who spent nearly a decade managing IT inside architecture firm WATG, the company describes itself as the world's largest IT firm dedicated entirely to Architecture, Engineering, and Design practices.&nbsp;
In this aecplustech article, we asked Donahue key questions to give you a clear understanding of how Flying Buttress thinks about AED technology, what a cloud-first migration actually looks like in practice, and why he does not believe in five-year plans.

1) Can you tell us the story behind Flying Buttress &mdash; how and why the company was founded specifically to serve Architecture, Engineering &amp; Design (AED) firms?
Although I have been in IT my entire career, I was not exposed to the specific needs of AED firms until I was hired at WATG in 2000. When I left in 2008, I was running the IT department, which included our KM and development staff. In this role, I had oversight of our budget and managed our vendor and consultant relationships.
When I started Flying Buttress in 2010, I wanted to create an MSP that worked the way I wished it would when I was internal IT. An MSP that was honest, ethical, and cared more about existing clients than chasing new ones. I am proud of what Flying Buttress has become some 16 years later.
&nbsp;
2) Flying Buttress specializes in managed IT services for AED firms. How does your approach differ from a generalist managed services provider?
The difference is significant in three ways: technical, financial, and cultural.
For technology, it is about understanding how to support an Autodesk environment, including patching and licensing, and the same for all the ancillary applications: Bluebeam, Deltek VantagePoint/Ajera, Lumion, SketchUp, and more.
Financially, having lived through a couple of significant economic downturns means we understand the importance of cash flow, WIP, and so on when budgeting and making the most of overhead dollars. We also understand the concept of deliverables and how to get the user able to work on them in a minimal amount of time.
Finally, the culture of AED is unique. In most other verticals there is a strong top-down culture: we are doing X because the CEO says we have to. With AED, the concept of a mandate is rare. This is a consensus culture. It makes it very difficult for IT, but that is part of the challenge. How do you implement change when there is no "just do it" button?

3) Many AEC firms struggle with collaboration across offices and with large design file workflows. How does Flying Buttress address these challenges technically and strategically for your clients?
It sounds simplistic, but the answer is the cloud. A combination of Autodesk Construction Cloud and Egnyte eliminates the traditional data silos that firms face. If we can do that without expensive hardware and on-premise equipment, so much the better.
For what it is worth, I have still not found any application that truly replicates the in-office collaboration experience, let alone the typical studio layout. That gap is real and worth acknowledging honestly.

4) Can you describe a customer success story or case study that illustrates how your services have transformed a firm&rsquo;s IT environment or business outcomes?
To be fair, we get a fair amount of our clients from firms that are already in trouble or want to make sure an upcoming transformation investment is spent wisely.
We recently took a 120-staff firm across three offices that was running VDI and offsite files and moved them to a full, cloud-first profile. One laptop per user. Work from anywhere. Significant security upgrades. And less expensive than the previous setup.

5) Security and data protection are major concerns in AEC practices. How do you approach cybersecurity and risk mitigation for firms that rely heavily on critical design data?
This is not easy in the AED world, in part due to the culture. There is a lack of mandate, as mentioned earlier, but also, designers and engineers generally want to share knowledge. It is an open, collaborative environment. There is a clear tradeoff between security and ease of access that needs to be managed carefully.
The cloud also plays a large role here: major platform providers offer more comprehensive security and backup capabilities than most individual firms could replicate on their own, regardless of budget.
Our approach is built on layered security and automated resolution, but the human factor is what we cannot fully control. We can only train for it.
&nbsp;
6) Looking ahead, what emerging technologies or trends do you think will most impact technology strategies within AEC firms &mdash; and how is Flying Buttress preparing to support those shifts?
AI, right now, is still in the nascent stage for most firms, much like 3D printing and virtual reality were years ago. Exciting, certainly front-of-mind, but there are not many concrete examples out there demonstrating impact on deliverable quality or the bottom line.
One advantage Flying Buttress has is that because we work with an extensive list of clients, we are better positioned than most to see what actually works and what does not across firms. What I can tell you is that we do not believe in strict five-year plans. Our outlooks cap at three years. Things are changing too quickly.

7) What advice would you give AEC firm leaders who are evaluating whether to outsource their IT support versus building internal technology capabilities?
I would always recommend some percentage of outsourcing, but that percentage can vary significantly based on firm size. We quite often work with internal IT in a hybrid mode, so it is not necessarily one or the other.
What is most important is having some tie-in to firm leadership who can ensure alignment with business goals, whether that happens at a consultant level or as internal staff. MSPs are especially helpful when considering new technologies, or for firm-to-firm comparisons: is our IT percentage of budget in alignment with other firms our size? That kind of benchmarking is difficult to do from the inside.

Most AEC firms have worked with generalist IT providers—and the results are rarely ideal. Flying Buttress founder Michael Donahue set out to change that, building an MSP tailored to architecture and engineering firms, with deep expertise in Autodesk environments, project-based workflows, and the unique culture of design practices.

BIM adoption is no longer the challenge. Every serious AEC firm models in 3D. The new dividing line is validation, and most firms are still on the wrong side of it.
Solibri has been making the case for BIM validation for years. As one of the leading model-checking platforms in the industry, it works with AEC firms to catch errors in the model before those errors reach the jobsite. That sounds straightforward. In practice, most firms still treat validation as something that happens occasionally, or at the end of a phase, rather than as a discipline built into the daily workflow.
Three articles Solibri published recently push back on that. Each one focuses on a different project type: data center construction, public transportation infrastructure, and design-build delivery. Taken separately, each makes a strong case on its own terms. Read together, they build something more useful: a clear picture of how the same underlying problem is playing out across very different parts of the industry, and why the stakes keep rising.
The connecting thread is clear. Technical complexity, legal accountability, delivery speed: each project type adds pressure in a different way. But the conclusion is the same each time. Getting the model right is not optional anymore. It is a business requirement.
Here is what each piece covers, and why it is worth paying attention to.

The data center construction market is expected to nearly double over the next five years, with global infrastructure investment approaching $7 trillion annually, per McKinsey. For AEC firms who want a piece of that work, these projects are technically demanding unlike almost anything else.
Data centers are extraordinarily dense environments. Fitting all of that into a coordinated, safe, and maintainable space is harder than it looks. Solibri spoke with Matthew Lohden, Senior Consultant in the Innovation Division of Accenture's Infrastructure and Capital Projects arm, about what that means in practice:

This is precisely where an unvalidated model does its worst damage. A clash between an underground bus duct and a bollard footing, a cable tray positioned too low for lift access: none of these are visible until they become field problems. In a high-voltage setting, rework is not only a budget issue. It directly increases safety risk to the people doing it.
Rule-based model checking lets teams define what "correct" looks like, then runs those rules across the full federated model on every change, after every subcontractor model is added. Issues are ranked by severity. Fixes are tracked. As Lohden noted:

Data center requirements are also shifting fast: from air-cooled to liquid-cooled, from standard rack densities to AI-driven loads exceeding 100kW per rack. A validated model is not a one-time task. It is the ongoing mechanism that keeps the project on course.&nbsp;

Data centers show the technical cost of getting the model wrong. The second Solibri article highlights something that will catch many AEC firms off guard: the legal cost.
For most of BIM's history on public projects, the 3D model played a supporting role alongside traditional 2D contract documents. That is changing fast. State departments of transportation across the U.S. are piloting programs where the model does not supplement the drawings. It becomes the legal document. Utah has greenlit full Model as Legal Document (MALD) projects under its digital delivery program. Pennsylvania launched its pilot in 2023. Texas has issued formal guidance announcing its transition to digital delivery with the model as the contractual authority. AASHTO has published readiness frameworks to help DOTs assess whether they are prepared to follow.

When the model is the legal document, it has to be as reliable as a signed drawing set. It must be the single source of truth for design intent, construction, quantity takeoffs, and long-term asset management. Any error becomes a legal liability. Technical complexity and legal accountability are two strong reasons to validate continuously. The third Solibri article shows why if your delivery model depends on speed, an unvalidated model is the fastest way to lose it.
Design-build puts design and construction under one roof. Teams work in parallel instead of in sequence, which cuts timelines significantly. A buildingSMART international survey found 31% of respondents already using 4D BIM and 27% using 5D BIM. But concurrent delivery has a problem that sequential delivery avoids: errors do not stay in one phase. They travel.
A buildability problem, a fire safety gap after a layout change, a clearance that no longer works after a design revision: in design-build, these do not wait for a review meeting. They show up on the jobsite, where they cost far more to fix.
Continuous model checking is what keeps speed from becoming a liability. Every iteration validated before it leaves the office. Every change checked before it reaches the field.
There is also a workforce gap to contend with. The construction industry is short roughly half a million workers, per U.S. Census Bureau data. Firms cannot always put their most experienced people on every task. Rules encoded in checking software carry the judgment of senior engineers to every team member, including those still building their instincts. The model becomes a training tool as much as a delivery tool.
At closeout, that validated model becomes a delivery asset. More owners now require an accurate as-built model at handover. On a design-build project there is no other party to produce it. A well-validated process throughout construction makes the as-built a natural output rather than a last-minute rebuild.

Data centers, MALD transportation projects, and design-build delivery are very different from each other. But they share one thing: in each case, the cost of an unvalidated model has crossed a line. It is no longer an internal quality matter. It is a project risk with real consequences for budget, schedule, safety, and legal standing.
The firms moving fastest are not the ones with the most sophisticated models. They are the ones who check their models constantly, on every change, across every discipline, acting on what they find. The model is right. Everything downstream works better because of it.

Clash detection is a solved problem &mdash; most teams working in Autodesk Revit and coordinating models in Autodesk Navisworks know the drill: run the clash test, export the report, book the coordination meeting, assign fixes, and repeat the cycle.
But anyone who has lived through it knows the truth: the real work doesn't start when clashes are found. It starts afterward &mdash; in the hours and days of manual repositioning, rerouting, and re-checking that follow.
At a recent product demo webinar hosted by aec+tech, the team behind Vavetek AI - Nitin Gupta (Founder &amp; CEO), Vimal Yadav (Founding Member and Product Lead), and Anuj Gupta (COO &amp; Co-founder) &mdash; walked through the thinking, technical architecture, and live demonstration of BAMROC, their automated MEP clash resolution software for Revit. The session brought together AEC professionals, BIM coordinators, and engineering consultancies curious about where AI-assisted coordination was actually headed not in theory, but in practice, inside live Revit models.
Throughout the discussion, one observation stood out: the industry has become very good at detecting clashes. Resolving them, however, remains largely manual, repetitive, and meeting-heavy.
Their solution is BAMROC, an AI-powered, patent-protected system built not just to find conflicts between MEP and structural systems, but to resolve them automatically, inside your existing Revit and Navisworks workflow.
That difference changes everything.
<h2 dir="ltr">The MEP Coordination Bottleneck in a &ldquo;Digital&rdquo; Workflow</h2>
For many teams, AEC teams, MEP coordination quietly eats up a huge portion of time during the engineering design phase.
Ducts get nudged around beams. Pipes are rerouted beneath ceilings. Cable trays shift to maintain clearance. And every change risks triggering a fresh set of clashes somewhere else in the model.
It's common for a BIM coordinator to spend an entire day resolving 60 to 75 clashes. On large projects with hundreds &mdash; or thousands &mdash; of conflicts, the ripple effect can stretch schedules and push up costs. To stay safe, designers often oversize shafts or lower ceilings more than necessary, sacrificing spatial efficiency just to avoid coordination risk.
The scale of the problem is significant. BIM coordinators who are&nbsp; highly skilled professionals are routinely tasked with resolving clashes one by one, manually adjusting routing and elements across models that span multiple disciplines, floors, and subcontractors. There is no automated audit trail. Validation is a separate exercise. And every coordination meeting adds overhead without adding design value.
Unlike tools such as Revizto or Solibri which excel at detecting, tracking, and assigning clashes, BAMROC is designed specifically to resolve them automatically.
Vavetek AI's founder, architect Nitin Gupta, who brings more than 30 years of industry experience, has seen this pattern over and over again. The conclusion his team reached was straightforward: detection is largely solved. Resolution isn't.&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Moving from Reports to Real Action</h2>
In a live demo, the BAMROC workflow initially looked familiar.
Structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing models were linked in Revit. A clash test was run in Navisworks. Sixty-three clashes appeared.
Normally, this is where the coordination meetings begin.
Instead, the Vavetek&rsquo;s Navisworks plugin generated a formatted clash report and pushed it back into Revit. The user defined a scope, selecting a specific floor and section box and chose resolution strategy such as moving elements (Movement Strategy) or bending MEP systems around obstructions (Bend Strategy).
Then the manual work stopped.
The computation shifted to the cloud. BAMROC's AI engine analysed every clash, explored viable solutions, and produced a prediction file - specifying how each element across every Revit file needed to move. Back in Revit, a single click on "Implement Prediction" applied all those changes to the model. Within the same session, all 63 clashes were resolved. Structural constraints were respected. Gravity pipes maintained slope. Pinned elements stayed in place. In all design intent is preserved.
Once implementation was complete, the built-in CRDR (Clash Resolution Diagnosis Report) tool in the Navisworks plugin validated the results. The system generated detailed HTML reports with before-and-after images of every clash, giving project teams a clear, documentable audit trail. For firms that need to hand over coordination evidence to clients or third-party checkers, those reports replace what would otherwise be hours of manual documentation.
Behind the scenes, the system applies mathematical, rule-based logic. It&rsquo;s deterministic, meaning the same inputs will always produce the same outputs. Unlike generative AI systems that can behave unpredictably, Bamroc doesn&rsquo;t &ldquo;hallucinate.&rdquo; It doesn&rsquo;t improvise. It follows defined geometric rules at scale.

One of the biggest concerns engineers have about AI in BIM workflows is losing visibility and control. What changed? Why did it move? Can I trust it?
As Nitin Gupta, Founder and CEO of Vavete AI, explained during the session:

BAMROC addresses these concerns directly. After processing, users can review detailed before-and-after visualisations for each clash. Errors logged during implementation are colour-coded: green indicates issues that BAMROC corrected automatically; red flags the small subset that requires human review. Engineers can navigate through those errors one by one, manually fix them, or use the AutoConnect feature to reconnect elements quickly. Changes can be validated, approved, or examined further before final sign-off.
Customization is another key piece. Firms can define clearance requirements&mdash;such as maintaining a 300 mm gap between services. Regional codes and company standards can be embedded without rewriting the system.
In short, the AI adjusts to the firm&rsquo;s workflow&mdash;not the other way around.

<h2 dir="ltr">Speed, Scale, and Early Momentum</h2>
The time savings are hard to ignore. Tasks that might take a full day manually&mdash;resolving dozens of clashes&mdash;can be completed in under an hour, including processing and review. Larger datasets with thousands of clashes naturally take longer, but the efficiency gap remains significant.
Beta testing began last year, with early traction in the Middle East &mdash; particularly in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia &mdash; where fast-paced, large-scale construction projects make MEP coordination efficiency critical. The region's project scale, compressed timelines, and high concentration of complex mixed-use and infrastructure developments create exactly the conditions where BAMROC's speed advantage compounds most.
Engineering consultancies and turnkey contractors are piloting the system.
For now, BAMROC supports Revit's RVT format and fits directly into existing Navisworks and ACC-based workflows, meaning teams don't need to replace their current tooling. IFC compatibility and expansion into other modelling ecosystems are on the roadmap, which would open the system to firms not working inside Autodesk's environment.
<h2 dir="ltr">A Shift in the Coordination Mindset</h2>
For years, coordination meetings have been a rite of passage in BIM workflows. Clash reports circulate. Teams negotiate for space. Adjustments trigger more adjustments.
BAMROC points to a different possibility. Coordination still matters &mdash; human expertise, project-specific knowledge, and design intent cannot be automated away. But much of the mechanical repositioning could happen quietly, automatically, and predictably in the background, long before a coordination meeting is ever scheduled.
