Despite the name, this is not a timber-framed building: the name refers to the facade, which is a pixelated relief that recalls the stacks of sawn timber once handled on this quay when Nordhavn was Copenhagen's nineteenth-century industrial Freeport.</p>

<p>The elevations are built from a grid of pixels made up of recycled aluminium frames with perforated plates, set against a raw concrete structure. At street level the language shifts to expanded wood panels mounted on hardwood slats, so the material the building is named after appears where people actually touch it. <h2>Project Overview</h2>
<p>The Terminal 3 expansion at Copenhagen Airport is an 80,000 square metre extension of the airport's main terminal in Kastrup, Denmark, designed by <strong>Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects</strong> with Zeso Architects. Construction runs from 2023 to 2028 with a budget of roughly 530 million euros. The expansion is intended to raise the airport's capacity from about 30 million to 40 million passengers a year, which makes it the largest single development in Copenhagen Airport's recent history.</p>
<h2>Design Concept</h2>
<p>The scheme extends the existing terminal beneath one continuous undulating roof that draws together the architectural language of the airport's earlier terminals rather than adding a fourth, unrelated expression. The translucent wavy ceiling references cloud formations by day and reads in the evening as a single surface reflecting a starry sky. Beneath it, a suspended, column-free floor plate divides the volume into two levels so that the passenger route stays legible from the moment travellers enter the hall.</p>
<h2>Daylight, Greenery and Materials</h2>
<p>Three vertical green light shafts planted with hanging vegetation cut through the floors as landmark crevices in the ceiling, admitting both direct sun and diffuse daylight while giving passengers a fixed point of orientation in a very large space. A central garden room runs vertically through the building and introduces seasonal change into the interior. A 270 metre window opens the concourse to the runways. Warm wooden floors continue the material language of the existing terminals, with granite in the baggage reclaim hall and timber panelling concealing building services.</p>
<h2>Team and Delivery</h2>
<p>Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects leads the design with Zeso Architects. COWI A/S provides engineering and Aarsleff is the contractor. Thornton Tomasetti was appointed for structural engineering peer review and sustainability consulting, facilitating design charrettes and reviewing daylight, energy, comfort and MEP alongside materials, health, wellness and water, so that the structural design would support the project's sustainability targets.</p>
