Studio Sarah Willmer Architecture is an award-winning, nationally and internationally published architecture and interiors firm based in San Francisco, working across the Bay Area, Sonoma and Marin County. The practice is led by Sarah Willmer, who holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University.

The studio was founded after fourteen years with several prominent firms, including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Polshek Partnership Architects and Anshen + Allen. The motivation was specific: a desire to stay intimately involved in the design process from concept through construction, rather than moving into the management role that scale usually imposes on senior architects.

Design Principles

Areas of Work

Private Residences

The core of the practice. Projects include the Two-Way House in San Francisco, conceived around pairing an original 1900 Victorian facade and traditional parlour with an open-plan, two-storey modern rear addition - a considered response to the challenge of adding contemporary space behind a protected historic frontage. Sonoma Retreat extends the residential work into rural Northern California.

Workplace

The studio designs commercial interiors, notably the Turn/River Capital headquarters, which transformed a generic tenant floor on the seventeenth storey of a San Francisco high-rise into a calm, collaborative workplace with fifty workstations, conference rooms at several scales, video-call rooms and shared spaces. The firm has also worked at the Shorebird campus in Mountain View.

Housing Research

Beyond commissioned work, the studio undertakes housing studies - including a design study of an eight-block area of San Francisco's Sunset district along the L Muni line, proposing three new housing prototypes. Speculative research of this kind engages directly with California's housing supply debate rather than waiting for a client to raise it.
