Sidell Pakravan Architects is an architecture practice based in Berkeley, California. Established in 2014, the studio has built a body of work across Northern California while continuing to explore critical ideas in architecture through speculative projects. Both principals teach architecture at UC Berkeley, and community outreach is treated as integral to the practice rather than as an activity alongside it.

Design Process

The studio's method is unusually explicit and unusually physical. Design is driven by foamcore models that test variations in volume, orientation and openings. Rather than resolving a single idea on screen, the team pushes one idea against different constraints and studies what emerges - a process the principals describe as producing unanticipated outcomes.

This matters because it inverts the usual sequence. Instead of committing to a form and then rationalising it, the practice builds many quick physical studies, allowing site, light and massing to argue back before anything is fixed.

Research and Practice

Speculative work sits alongside built commissions. Ideas developed through unbuilt research projects are then tested in real buildings across the region, so the two strands feed each other. For a small studio, maintaining that research capacity is a deliberate investment in the intellectual quality of the work.

Recognition

Sidell Pakravan received Architectural Record's Design Vanguard award in 2021, a distinction reserved for emerging practices judged to be shaping the direction of the field. The studio's work has also been covered by The Architect's Newspaper for its reexamination of models of architectural practice.
