Modus Studio is an architecture and design practice founded in 2008 and based in Northwest Arkansas. The firm now numbers around thirty people and works from a self-developed, self-designed studio and fabrication shop that is certified LEED Platinum - a building that doubles as a demonstration of what the practice argues for.

The studio describes itself first as an idea: that the patterns, perceptions and senses of everyday experience can generate a process that leads to architecture and good design. Rather than starting from formal precedent, work begins from ordinary observation. The conviction underlying this is straightforward - all people deserve good space derived from good ideas.

Thinking and Making

The most distinctive thing about Modus is its refusal to separate design from fabrication. The practice bridges architecture with graphic design, prototyping and hands-on making, arguing that a designer modelling something in three dimensions at a desk lacks the knowledge that comes from actually building the part.

Its in-house fabrication shop lets the team prototype iteratively, refine details to the level of craft they want, and confirm that what they draw can be realistically built and afforded.
