The National September 11 Memorial

Handel Architects designed the National September 11 Memorial in New York, one of the most significant commemorative projects of its generation. Work of this kind demands a different discipline from commercial architecture: the brief is emotional and civic rather than functional, and the design must hold meaning for a very wide public over a very long horizon.

Passive House and Sustainable Design

Sustainability sits at the centre of the practice rather than at its edges, and Handel Architects has become one of the most experienced firms working at scale with Passive House standards.

The firm designed Winthrop Center in Boston, a mixed-use tower of over 1.8 million square feet combining approximately 812,000 square feet of Class A office space with 510,000 square feet housing 317 residences. Its office component is certified by the Passive House Institute as the largest Passive House office building in the world.

The design achieves this through a well-insulated building facade, an air-tight exterior envelope and an advanced energy recovery ventilation system, delivering significant energy savings alongside superior indoor air quality. Office spaces are designed to incorporate 30 to 35% more fresh air than conventional commercial designs. The office component targets LEED Platinum and WELL Gold; the residential portion targets LEED Gold.

Achieving Passive House certification on a commercial tower of that scale is genuinely difficult - the standard was developed for smaller, simpler buildings, and meeting its airtightness and thermal bridging requirements on a high-rise curtain wall requires solving problems that had not previously been solved at that size.

Urban Density and Sustainability
