About Ha/f Climate Design

Ha/f Climate Design is a climate consultancy for the built environment, based in Canada and working across the Greater Toronto Area and internationally. The practice was established on a single premise: the construction and operation of buildings account for most of a city's greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing how we build cities is among the most important challenges in reducing them.

The name states the goal. Ha/f exists to work with designers, planners and city builders to halve those emissions within this decade - a deliberately specific and time-bound target rather than a general commitment to sustainability.

Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment

The team specialises in Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (wbLCA) for new construction projects. Where operational energy modelling addresses how a building performs once occupied, wbLCA measures the carbon embodied in producing, transporting, installing, maintaining and eventually disposing of everything the building is made from.

As buildings become more energy efficient in use, the proportion of their lifetime carbon locked into structure, facade and finishes grows correspondingly - and unlike operational emissions, embodied carbon is largely spent before anyone moves in. Circular Economy Services

Demonstration projects are important here because the barriers to material reuse are rarely technical. Insurance, warranty, certification and supply-chain logistics are what stop reclaimed steel or timber being specified, and only built examples resolve those questions credibly.
