Dragados is one of Spain's largest construction companies and the principal construction arm of ACS Group, itself among the world's leading infrastructure organisations. Headquartered in Madrid, the company specialises in heavy civil engineering: highways, railways, tunnels, bridges, dams, ports, marine works and large-scale public infrastructure.

Its identity is rooted in civil works rather than buildings. Where many international contractors diversified into property and services, Dragados has stayed concentrated on the infrastructure that is difficult to build: long-span bridges, deep tunnels, coastal defences, hydroelectric schemes and rail corridors.

History

The company was founded in 1941 as Dragados y Construcciones, a name that translates as Dredging and Construction, formed to carry out dredging and construction work at the Port of Tarifa in Cádiz. That marine engineering origin shaped the firm's early specialisms, and it went on to build extensive experience in hydroelectric and civil engineering work through the middle of the twentieth century.

When the Spanish economy contracted during the mid-1970s slump, Dragados turned outward, entering Latin American, North African and Middle Eastern markets for the first time. That international foundation is what allows the business to operate globally today. In 2003 ACS Group acquired Dragados, consolidating two of Spain's major contractors and creating the construction division that ACS operates now.

Capabilities and Track Record

Across its history Dragados has delivered an unusually large volume of linear and heavy infrastructure, including more than 10,500 kilometres of highways, around 1,700 kilometres of railways, over a thousand kilometres of tunnels and roughly 250 dams and hydroelectric facilities, alongside major airport and port projects.

North American Operations

In the United States and Canada, Dragados operates as FlatironDragados, formed from the combination of Dragados USA with Flatiron. The North American business reports annual revenue above seven billion US dollars and an order backlog exceeding 17.8 billion dollars, positioning it among the largest civil contractors on the continent.

FlatironDragados works across ten defined areas: aviation, bridges, dams, highways, large projects, marine, rail, resiliency, tunnelling and water. Resiliency in particular reflects growing North American demand for coastal and flood protection infrastructure, an area where the firm's marine and dam heritage transfers directly.

As part of ACS, Dragados can offer clients the local presence of a regional contractor combined with the balance sheet and technical resources of a multinational.
