Crystal Plaza is a 357,000-square-meter mixed-use development in Shanghai's Qiantan (New Bund) district, developed by Tishman Speyer in partnership with Shanghai Lujiazui Group and designed by KPF. Completed in 2018, the project comprises six office towers rising 80-120 meters, six residential towers, and a multi-level retail podium, unified by a crystalline facade of vertical and diagonal metal fins. GENx Design & Technology worked within KPF's architectural team on this Shanghai office and mixed-use assignment, providing BIM leadership to support coordination across the campus's twelve towers and shared podium infrastructure.

Why this tool/tech was selected

Crystal Plaza is a twelve-tower campus, six office towers and six residential towers, unified by a shared podium, a crystalline metal-fin facade system, and a continuous landscaped plaza. Coordinating that many towers on a single podium meant reconciling structural grids, curtain-wall geometry, and MEP routing across buildings designed and phased somewhat independently, while keeping the crystalline facade's angled fins consistent from tower to tower. KPF's architectural team needed BIM modeling that could track how each tower's envelope and structure interfaced with the shared podium below, catch clashes between disciplines before they reached construction, and keep design documentation synchronized across a project of this scale, which is the role GENx Design & Technology filled as BIM lead within the architectural team.

Challenges the Client Faced before

Delivering twelve towers on a single podium within a multi-year build schedule created significant coordination risk. Six office towers and six residential towers, each with independent structural and MEP systems, all needed to tie into a shared podium, retail base, and continuous crystalline facade without conflicting at the interfaces. Because the towers were designed and documented somewhat independently within KPF's team, there was a real risk that structural, envelope, and MEP information would drift out of sync between buildings, surfacing as costly clashes once construction was underway rather than being caught during design.

The previous method used

Before consolidated BIM/VDC coordination, large multi-tower developments like this one were typically managed with separate, tower-by-tower CAD models and periodic 2D overlay checks between architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines. On a twelve-tower shared podium, that approach made it difficult to catch interface conflicts between the podium structure and each tower's individual design, and inconsistencies in the crystalline facade's geometry often surfaced only after drawings reached the construction team rather than during design.

Time / Money saved & the Business Impact.

By coordinating BIM models across all twelve towers and the shared podium, GENx's role as BIM lead helped KPF's team resolve interface conflicts, between tower structure, curtain-wall geometry, and podium-level MEP routing, during design rather than after construction documents were issued. That coordination supported a project that has since been recognized for its facade and lighting design, including a darc award for its crystalline lighting scheme, and that was delivered as a completed, mixed-use campus in Shanghai's Qiantan district. As GENx's own project materials note, this work reflects practical, on-the-job BIM and VDC experience gained while employed at KPF, and the project itself remains the property of KPF.
